How to Change Your Digital Door Lock Password and Handle a Dead Battery

Almost every home in Korea is equipped with a 'Digital Door Lock' that doesn't require a physical key. While convenient, it can be confusing if you're using it for the first time or if the battery suddenly dies. Today, we've summarized essential tips for managing your door lock for a secure stay.

1. Changing Your Password

The first thing you should do when moving into a new place is change the password. While designs vary by manufacturer, almost all door locks in Korea follow a common method for changing the code:

  1. Open the Battery Cover: Open the battery cover on the main unit on the inside of the door.

  2. Find the Registration Button: Look for a small button inside the cover. It is usually labeled 'R', 'S', or '등록' (Registration). If there are no labels, the most prominent small button is the setting button.

  3. Press the Button: Press the button once briefly until you hear a 'beep.'

  4. Enter New Password: Enter your desired numbers on the keypad outside.

  5. Complete: Press the registration button again or the '*' key on the keypad to save the setting.

💡 Note: After changing the password, keep the door open and test the new code to make sure it works properly!

2. When the Battery is Dead

If your door lock plays a different melody than usual or a red light flickers, it's a signal to replace the batteries. If you miss this signal and the battery dies completely, what should you do?

Don't worry! You can solve this with a single '9V battery.'

  1. Buy a 9V Battery: Purchase a rectangular 9V battery at a nearby convenience store.

  2. Find Emergency Contacts: There are two metal protrusions (emergency power terminals) at the bottom or front of the external unit.

  3. Supply Power: Touch the 9V battery to these terminals. Wait a moment, and the keypad will light up as power is temporarily supplied.

  4. Enter Password: Enter your password while holding the battery against the terminals to open the door.

3. Need Help? Contact Your Host Directly!

If the door still won't open even after supplying emergency power, or if you suspect the lock itself is broken, do not use excessive force. Improper handling can cause further damage.

If you encounter any issues, do not panic; please reach out to your host immediately through the Enko-chat for assistance.
